STYLE DISSECTION: CLARISSA EXPLAINS IT ALL (SEASON 1)

Yes, season 1.  This post is just my pick of the outfits from the first 13 episodes of Clarissa Explains It All.  There are four more seasons available for dissection, and I think I might have to do them all.  *POSSIBLE SERIES KLAXON*

Most of you (I hope) will remember Clarissa Darling from 90's TV, when she was an inspiring, wacky, smart and funny girl who brightened up every Saturday morning.  She was played by Melissa Joan Hart, an actress who managed to have two extremely likeable, successful and family-friendly TV shows under her (probably floral) belt by the time she was 27.  The other being Sabrina The Teenage Witch.  Like a lot of people I felt like I grew up with Melissa, or rather the characters she portrayed, and I loved everything about her.  Including her outfits.

While Sabrina Spellman was more conventional in her clothing choices, Clarissa was out there.  She displayed tastes and a personal style that was highly developed for her age.  Even as a clueless 12-year-old I knew this girl had something going on.  And looking back over her looks now I can't believe the creativity of the wardrobe department on the show.  I love how much personality they gave Clarissa through her clothes, she had an identity, and I remember finding the idea that girls could dress in a way that was different and exciting very empowering and aspirational.  Am I going too deep for a programme I used to watch on Live & Kicking with messy hair while dressed in my pajamas?  Whatever.

Some of you of course will have no idea who I'm talking about.  So let's introduce Clarissa. Here are her likes and dislikes:

That last drawing there is a pool of "barf".

How does a girl like Clarissa spend her time?  Well luckily she has provided this handy (pizza) pie chart displaying the percentage of her life she spends thinking about her three favourite activities.

In terms of working out her fashion rules Clarissa is also very instructive.  She likes accessories, including these ones below:

She is also not afraid to point out her (sometimes dubious) style inspirations:

She has a pet caiman, a small crocodylian called Elvis who lives in her room in a sand pit.

She programmes the coolest computer games in the world.

She is brave.  She'll stand up to bullies which makes them inevitably fall in love with her and appear at the kitchen window to serenade her with flowers.

Clarissa isn't the kind of girl who'll just wear an ordinary bomber jacket and baseball cap.  She's the kind of girl who will turn that bomber jacket inside out so its orange lining shows, and will wear an embellished baseball cap, twisted to the side.

She loves floral patterned tights, and will wear them under everything.  Shorts, skirts, sometimes even with other patterned socks on top.

She also loves cycling shorts.  Either knee or three-quarter length.  Again, preferably worn under shorts, skirts, or the most amazing patchwork dungarees you've ever seen in your life.

(Above: those dungarees)

Love those socks.

Clarissa and her friends are very keen on headbands.  Thick headbands worn low on the forehead.

Yes, that is a plait with a miniature fish attached.

Oh I forgot to say, Clarissa has the coolest friend in the world.  Sam.  Look at him in his tie-dye below. I had such a big crush on him as a kid.

Also I assume you guys are as jealous and in awe of her bedroom as I was/am.  The hubcaps!

I also covet these watermelon cups, below. *trawls eBay for three hours*

As well as a large collection of hats, a whole wall-full in fact, Clarissa also has a penchant for braces (or suspenders in the US).

Layering is also a key outfit rule for Clarissa, and not only with her leg wear.  She is fond of oversized shirts and waistcoats/vests.  And she often wears a long dangling necklace.  In some shots I think she's wearing her house keys...

I love so much about this outfit above.  The shoes, the ankle bracelet, the different polka-dot patterns and the pop swatch.

Leopard print chiffon shirt, flower brooch and coloured laces in her DMs.  APPROVE.

Something else she does very well is a tunic over leggings or trousers.  See below.

R-r-r-red converse!

THIS OUTFIT IS SO GOOD.  LOOK AT HER GREEN SOCKS.  LOOK AT THEM.

This woman is also not afraid of mixing animal prints with florals and pinks.

Urgh she's so dreamy, I'm very into this black and lime green mixed with floral below.  Notice how she ties it all together with her black and lime green hair tie?

So thank you Clarissa for your wisdom, your LOLs and your clothes.  God, what I wouldn't give to go through this pile she's throwing out.

We had so much fun making this!  It was directed by Ozzie Pullin, who is rad, and it's always great when we get the chance to be weird in videos (me in particular).

Ozzie was very influenced by 'Orange Is The New Black' which was wonderful because we love that show. It was so much fun to don a tangerine jumpsuit in homage to those women.  Can't wait for their return on June 6th.

PALE PINK TOKYO

I found this satchel backpack in WEGO in Tokyo, a pretty awesome shop that had a ton of these in different pastel shades.  They also stock loads of preppy skirts, platform boots and socks.  Tokyo was full of amazing socks.  Socks And The City.  I bought a lot.

We went to several parks during our stay, walking around for hours in the winter sunshine. Jeremy had the chance to eat a combination of his two favourite things - ice cream sandwiches and anything matcha flavoured.  I was also chuffed to see a sprinkling of the cherry blossom Japan is known for - so beautiful.

Pink is definitely the colour of Tokyo. It was all over the place - adverts, shops, clothes, cheeks - so in order to fit in I spent a lot of time in this multi-coloured ASOS fluffy cropped jumper.  It's so cosy.  The shorts are my Missguided faves.

Below is a photo of some of the gifts we were given by people at our show (notice the pink again...). And yes, that pillow depicts us in a spaceship, nestled up next to some roses and a cat.  And yes, it does smell of lavender.  And yes, it is now one of our most treasured possessions.  Thank you Shoko!

STYLE DISSECTION: 'HEATHERS'

Heathers has been one of my favourite films for a very long time.  It's wicked, funny and iconic, a teen cult classic.  The dialogue is extremely quotable, the outfits are ambitious and, along with the music, help to build a strange and surreal high school world.  It always reminds me of a gentler American Psycho: it's gruesome and outrageous, but most of the characters don't seem particularly affected by the violence, which just makes it all more unsettling.  And if Patrick Bateman has Huey Lewis And The News, Jason Dean has Big Fun.

If you haven't seen it before please go and watch it now, and don't read this piece as it's packed with spoilers.

So, which Heather would you be?  Queen bee Heather Chandler, the bookish Heather Duke who she treats so horrendously, or cheerleader Heather McNamara, statuesque with a penchant for awful jocks?  Or maybe you're a Veronica Sawyer, a girl who doesn't actually like her friends - they're more like co-workers, and their job is being popular.

Perhaps a better question to ask is, what's your signature colour when it comes to clothes?  Below are the Heathers and Veronica wearing theirs in the cafeteria.

Your Signature Colour Is Red
Oh OK, so you're Heather Chandler.  You're all about power.  You probably date/dated college guys when you were still in high school and you love big shoulder pads, your red scrunchie, and boxy blazers.  Here you are putting one of your best friends in her place (which is always below you).

Where do you meet these awesome (by awesome I mean AWFUL) fraternity lame-os you insist on dating?  At their dorm parties of course.  You bust out your ultimate, "I'm more mature than I look" outfit - pearls and this sweetheart-neckline body con dress.

To everyone at school, and even your closest friends, you appear to have it all together and seem happy with your status and the way you're perceived.  But sometimes when you're alone in the bathroom you can't stand your own reflection.

You probably grew up with a mother who was also super popular as a teenager, and consequently her signature colour is also red.  Which explains why your kitchen is decorated like a candy cane.

You woke up like this:

Everything about your life is meticulous, perfect and crimson.  You even get murdered on a beautiful plush red carpet.

You have creepy child paintings in your room.  That's just how you roll.  And said creepy child is wearing red, naturally.

And even your funeral is an explosion of scarlet.

After your death your locker becomes a shrine to your favourite hue, your self-obsession and your funny little high heel key ring.

In fact you're so successful in making red "your colour" you're even wearing it in your friends' nightmares.  I think Winona's subconscious mixed in a bit of her Beetlejuice memories here too, which is nice.

Your Signature Colour Is Green
You're Heather Duke.  Life is not easy for the Dukes of this world, especially when there is a Heather Chandler prowling the hallways.  You're the most quiet of the popular girls, and you like books.  Don't believe me?  Here you are in your matching skirt, jacket AND shirt, reading Moby Dick

And at the same time you're also wearing these cute green socks with buttons, and you play croquet with the green mallet and ball.  Do you get it yet? GREEN IS YOUR LIFE.

But even though you've dedicated your life to one hue you still play around with it (the teeniest tiniest amount).  For example sometimes you wear white lacy socks and green tartan shoes.

Sometimes you wear a green tartan pencil skirt and a green belt and green tartan braces.  See, you're totally chilled out about the green thing, you're not obsessed or anything.  Why do people always look doubtful when you say that?!

"I'm totally wearing a bit of white you guys!  And this hat is BEIGE.  I'm a chilled out, relaxed dresser who SOMETIMES likes green".

"OK, look, I admit that yes, I do love all shades of mint.  But I don't feel like I should have to change.  Especially when I just bought this awesome studded jacket on sale".

Thing is though, once your best frenemy has died, suddenly you realise there are lots of other colours out there to choose from.  And you start to think that maybe you want to try something else.  Say, for example, oh I don't know...red.  Just a tiny bit at first.

Hey, red feels kind of good.  Maybe you should wear more red?  What's the harm in that?  It's not like by wearing red you're going to become some awful bully like Heather Chandler was.  It wasn't the colour of her clothes that made her mean.  Or was it?...

No, no it's fine, you're being silly!  Wearing red definitely won't turn you into a horrible person who publicly humiliates their other friend Heather when she calls a radio helpline for advice.

OH DAMN GIRL!

Is the colour red evil?  Look how evil Heather Duke looks wearing red and burning this envelope!

Look how evil she is bathing in the sun like an evil cat someone has dressed up in a little red outfit and laid next to a zebra print bag.

(Sidenote: ooh look at these Japanese-inspired jackets and blouses Heather Duke and Veronica Sawyer wear)

NO BUT SERIOUSLY GUYS, BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU WEAR RED

Your Signature Colour Is Yellow (And Grey)
Yes you're popular, you're a cheerleader, and you fit into what "society" deems physically attractive.  But you're kind of in the cool clique by birth not design.  You've always belonged so it's not as important to you to stay there.  After High School you'll probably end up going to a mid-level college where you downplay your popular-status for a bit and mingle more with the drama and science crowd, which makes you even more lovely.

But until then, you wear yellow. Even yellow socks with yellow leggings.

You looooooove your yellow socks.  But you're also a big fan of grey.  You're not crazy into having loads of different looks or being really adventurous with your outfits, but you know that yellow and grey work well together.

Your bedroom looks like it's been decorated by the sun.  And apparently the sun enjoys frills.

Even your pet is yellow.  And you keep your little yellow bird in a yellow cage, in front of your famous cow painting.  I bet everyone who comes over to your house is like, "first I need to see your room which apparently THE SUN decorated, then I need to look at that cow painting I've been hearing so much about".

You like animals.  You have a lamp shaped like a swan, and you still cuddle your stuffed bear.  You lie on your bed in your yellow socks, using your yellow phone, wearing your yellow pyjamas.

And when you decide you want to kill yourself at school you use yellow pills that come in a yellow container.

Your name is Heather McNamara and you like yellow.

Your Signature Colour Is Blue
Ohhh, OK, you're the blue one.  You're a maverick, an outsider, you're just a tourist in this High School life.  And you write down your tales of the natives in your diary.  AND YOU HAVE VERY BIG HANDWRITING.

Seriously, she must go through a journal a month.  And why isn't she using both sides of the page?  Think of the trees Veronica.

One of the great things about being a maverick is that while you still definitely have a signature colour, you can mix it up a bit more with other colours.  Mainly the dark ones, to match your cold black heart.

Of course in order to stay in with your clique you're going to have to keep wearing that blue.  But often you'll just throw on some duck egg-hued tights with your pencil skirt dress and off the shoulder top.

I bet you also accessorise really well with a jumbo squishee.

Here is your "oh crap I just killed my best friend by accident" outfit.  That is a looooong waistcoat.

As a murderer of close friends and acquaintances you develop a good game when it comes to funeral dressing.  One word: hats.

Also becoming a teen killer (sort of) by accident means you stop worrying so much about the small things.  For example whether or not one should mix navy and black.

At this difficult time perhaps you'll seek comfort in your signature colour, choosing to wear it completely head to toe.

Do you think the bedrooms of all popular girls are decorated in just one colour?  Which came first - being popular or using only one shade when interior designing?

A frilly denim skirt, black lace crop top and grey jacket are the perfect clothes for an early morning murder-made-to-look-like-suicide.

"Hey Heather McNamara!  I can wear grey too!  In fact I'm so good at wearing grey, I can even pull off these culottes with elasticated cuffs!"

"Oh man, I really want to wear my blue tights today, but I also want to wear my blue shoes...Wait, I couldn't possibly wear them both together...could I?"

Yes, yes you can.

Veronica's Christmas List:
Blue stuff for my bedroom.
A good lawyer.
That is all.

Veronica often makes her crazy boyfriend stand in blue light when he's waving his knife around.

And her favourite time of day is blue o'clock.

Also guys, she uses a monocle.  Enough said.

Your Signature Colour Is CRAZY
You're completely insane and you couldn't care less what colour your clothes are, you just want to reek revenge on all the weirdoes at your school and punish your dad for your mother's suicide.  You're Jason Dean.

That said, you're super dooper into your black denim coat.  Or is it linen?  Who cares?  Definitely not you.

You wear it mostly with jeans, a shirt and a vest.  Either black or white.  And you gesticulate a lot while holding guns.

(I like to think Veronica insisted he wear his blue shirt to their gun-swinging make-out party in her room, "You must match my walls!")

Jocks lean in really close when they talk to Jason J.D. Dean.

And in return he stares at them from a distance when he's riding his motorcycle.  I like his boots.

It's kind of sad what happens to the love of Veronica and Jason.

But in the long run it is better for her to not be with him.  He was kind of a bad influence on her.  And while I really don't think he needed to blow himself up in order for her to be safe, at least now she can just move on with her life and extricate herself from all that weird High School cliquey mess.

NO VERONICA, DON'T DO IT!

NICK MOHAMMED AND JULIA DAVIS ARE VERY FUNNY

Nick Mohammed is seriously funny, and has been for a while.  He's an actor, writer, magician and character comedian.  He's an exceptional performer, and thinks up some pretty wonderful situations to find humour in.  One year at Edinburgh he did his take on the Apollo 21 moon landing, where he played all the parts, including the first dog in space.  He's currently working on a script with the outstanding Julia Davis, a brilliant woman with a knack for portraying darkness and horrible people in a way that makes you love them.  She's a genius.

At some point during the writing process they've got together and recorded some improvised sketches which you can download as a podcast-type-thing here.  I listened to them all this morning.  They're fantastic.  Surreal and sometimes, as Nick himself said, "a little risqué" they're an utter delight.  And I don't think there's anything better than hearing Julia Davis try and stifle her laughter when she sees Nick almost break into giggles.

I really hope there is an episode two.

Jeremy's Totoro impersonation is spot on.

I have to admit, when Jeremy first introduced me to the films of Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli several years ago I was a bit dubious.  Animated films about kids, houses with legs and mystical creatures?  In Japanese? Um, I don't know...

Oh how stupid past me was.  I'm yet to see a film made by the studio that I don't like, and their movies have introduced me to other Japanese animated masterpieces.  For example The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, a science fiction romance film about a girl who, well, you can imagine.  But back to Ghibli.  On our visit to Japan we took a day to go out to the Tokyo suburbs and visit the Museum dedicated to the film company.  It was marvellous, the building itself was pure Miyazaki, and along with interactive displays has several rooms that seem to be faithful recreations of where he writes and draws.  Stacks of books, ash trays filled with cigarette butts, hundreds of coloured pens, and photographs of location inspirations.  These came from all over the world, but mostly from Europe - France, Belgium and Germany in particular.  Which makes a lot of sense when you watch his films.

He's also fascinated by nature and flowers, there were so many books about gardening and different types of trees and plants.  All of which seeps into the beautiful watercolours of characters that are pinned all over the walls of the museum.  We also got to watch a short film made by the studio, the tickets for which were different strips of film from a classic Ghibli moment.  Mine was from Ponyo and it's pictured below.  The museum is surrounded by a beautiful park where we took some photos, and since it was the suburbs there was still snow over a lot of the ground.  I was wearing a crop top (pretty stupid of me, and some trousers I got from Collect Point in Harajuku.  They have braces, which seem to be a big deal in Tokyo)

After we'd seen everything - including the cutest babies in the world climbing all over a replica Catbus - we went to the shop and spent a good chunk of holiday pocket money on souvenirs.  Including some excellent cookies, and I got a notebook covered with a picture from Kiki's Delivery Service, my favourite Ghibli film.

If you want to go to the Museum you have to book your tickets in advance from their website, you can't buy tickets on the door, it's a slight hassle, but totally worth it.

ORANGE AND SILVER

I'm seriously pale.  I have a great moon tan.  In some lights I'm almost transparent.  So I didn't think I could ever wear orange, and especially not an orange so bright it threatened to suck all the other colours out of the photos.  Maybe I actually can't do orange and I'm just kidding myself, but then aren't clothes all about pretending?  (Oh, are they not?  My bad).  I found this top and daisy print shorts in Miss Selfridge, a shop I haven't patronised since 1995 when they had those ace heart crop tops, not that I ever owned said top, but maybe I can now as there is currently one selling for £1.99 on eBay.  Since I was in a bit of an orange daze I wasn't that sure about accessories, but I thought maybe silver would be a good match, as gold would surely mingle with the carrot hue and implode into a sticky squash mess?

I'll keep you updated.

TEENAGE

Last week I saw Teenage a documentary about, well, teenagers.  It covers youth culture from the end of the 19th century to the first half of the 20th, which, according to the film, is when that midpoint between childhood and adulthood first started to define itself.  Or rather, be defined by the people living through it.  Pretty much all of the footage is archive, and some of it is gobsmackingly wonderful - for instance, the clips in colour from teenagers in Germany at the start of WW2 who didn't want to join Hitler Youth and instead listened to swing music and took photos of themselves dressed as gangsters.

The film also has some original footage. One tale they recreate is that of Brenda Dean Paul, a silent movie actress and member of the group known as Bright Young People in the 1920's, who sadly became one of the first famous heroin addicts.   In an interview with The Hairpin, director Matt Wolf described why her story was one that jumped out for him. "I discovered her in the book and she’s a sort of an obscure figure. I was really intrigued by her contemporary archetype—she was elevated by the media as this kind of aspirational figure but at the same time publicly crucified and condemned, and she had this public downfall. It’s something you see a lot in pop culture now with Lindsay Lohan or Justin Bieber. There is a kind of sexist quality to it as well, a crucifixion of the young female figure, and that’s something that as a culture we do a lot." (That's a great interview by the way, as is the one by Laura Snapes on Rookie.  She spoke to Wolf and Jon Savage, the author of Teenage: The Creation of Youth 1845–1945, the book the documentary is based on).

It's scored by original music from Bradford Cox of Deerhunter/Atlas Sound, who, of course, has done an incredible job.  And be sure to check out the film's website, where there's a great page called Tube Time which has lots of archive footage to scroll through.  Including a 9 minute clip of the 1984 Miss Teen USA Pageant, and a video that explains how to Jitterbug.  There's a lot of jitterbugging in the documentary and it always took my breath away.

STYLE DISSECTION: THE ROYAL TENENBAUMS

After seeing the breathtaking The Grand Budapest Hotel I've been itching to pull apart a Wes Anderson film.  And while all his movies are aesthetically perfect there's something about Margot, Richie and their infallible style that I just can't let go of.

One of the brilliant stylistic choices Anderson made, as you'll see, was to have every character wear variations of the same outfit throughout the film.  Also all of their clothes and style choices seem to be heavily rooted in the 1970s, which shows that they're all trapped in the time of their heyday.  And that's just bloody great directing.

Anyway, let's waste no more time.  Introducing...

Margot Tenenbaum: secretive, sullen, she rarely smiles and likes to lock herself in the bathroom so she can surreptitiously smoke without anyone knowing.  And she is missing a finger.  She's an adopted literary genius, winning a Pulitzer aged 15, and has perfected a look of indifference about her enviable talents.  Like her brothers, Margot cemented her look at a very young age.  Lacoste tennis dresses (a little nod to Richie's skills on the court perhaps?), a Fendi fur coat and brown loafers with no socks.  Oh, and big fat swipes of kohl on her eyes and a barrette in her bob.

Imagine if you worked out your style at that age and it was so good you never had to change it?  If I still dressed how I did when I was 15 I'd be wearing  long velvet waistcoats and pleated jeans.

I love the idea of collecting slight variations on the same look over the years.  Just look at this wardrobe full of rows and rows of these dresses and loafers.  Getting dressed in the morning must be a breeze.

We don't know much about Margot at first - I told you she was secretive - but halfway through we learn of her years of experimentation and her first marriage to a Jamaican recording artist.  We also find out how that finger was cut off. (SPOILER: She chopped it off by accident with an axe, ow.)

She also had black hair and dabbled in 15 denier stockings, which I'm really into.

Since a lot of her time is spent hanging out in the bathroom she often just wears nude slips, and check out the close-up of that eyeliner, so perfect with the pale matte lipstick.

I also noticed that she likes wearing pink gloves with her Fendi coat, gloves she's presumably always had?  Or did she buy larger sizes of her clothes and accessories as she grew?  I NEED ANSWERS.

Of course Margot doesn't just love her tennis dresses, she also loves...

Richie, a prodigy on the grass court from a very young age, a sweet soul who bawls his eyes out during a match when he sees Margot sitting with her new husband Raleigh St. Clair.  Why is a man suffering from unrequited love so attractive in film?  In real life wouldn't it be a bit creepy?

As with Margot, Richie's look as an adult is pretty much identical to what he wore as a kid, and boy oh boy, was he a cute kid.

(Hi to Eli in the background).

Even as a non-tennis playing adult Richie's look still incorporates parts of his sports paraphernalia.  He wears a polo shirt and headband with his wool camel suit.  And big dark sunglasses, like the full on superstar this man is.  Apparently the style of Richie was based on Björn Borg, who shocked the tennis world by retiring at the young age of 26 and also favoured a similar headband and Fila polo shirts.  But did Björn Borg live on an ocean liner and carry around a pepper shaker in his pocket so he could add spice to his trademark Bloody Marys?  I think not.  Game, set and match to Richie.

After his SPOILER ALERT suicide attempt something changes in Richie.  He keeps the suit but the 70's haircut, beard and headband disappear.  He (sort of) emerges from the era he was stuck in, and starts going for what he wants in life - helping his best bud Eli quit drugs and winning the love of Margot.

Speaking of Eli...

I love Eli.  He does some pretty awful things - having an affair with his best friend's adopted sister (including make-out sessions on the subway), driving his car into his best friend's family home when he's high on mescaline, in general being a teeny bit insensitive.  BUT LOOK HOW HE DRESSES.

Unlike Margot and Richie, Eli hasn't always had his look sorted.  As a young boy longing to be a Tenenbaum he mostly wore his school uniform, although his love of face paint does resurface at the end of the film.

Eli's character is based on the authors Cormac McCarthy, whose books include the classic No Country For Old Men, and Jay McInerney, who famously wrote Bright Lights Big City.  However from what I can tell neither of them wear cowboy hats or fringed jackets.  Which is a shame.

In the film Eli is referred to as, "the James Joyce of the West", and I guess his clothes reflect that - a New York kid who is emulating a Western look rather than actually being from there.  Whatever the reason for his sartorial choices, I'm a fan.

I also like his taste in art, such as the painting below by Mexican artist Miguel Calderón which was part of his 1998 exhibit "Aggressively Mediocre/Mentally Challenged/Fantasy Island (circle one)".  #ARTFACTS.

Also, in the film Etheline Tenenbaum receives a clipping of Eli Cash posing with a snake, which was a nod to the fact that Owen and Luke Wilson's mother, Laura Wilson, once worked with the photographer Richard Avedon and documented his "In the American West" project.  In which there is a portrait of a young man with a snake.  #ARTFACTS.

As well as his grey trousers, amazing shirts and hats, I'm also a fan of Eli's haircut.  General Custer all the way.  Look at it flopping around his painted face (told you) as he ruins the wedding of...

AND

These two are great, their love is a beautiful thing, and Henry Sherman seems to be one of the nicest men to have ever lived.

Etheline was loosely based on Anderson's mother Ann Burroughs, who because an archaeologist after her divorce.  In fact these awesome glasses are actually Burroughs' own pair.

(OK, I'm not 100% sure it's these glasses that belonged to her as Etheline wears several pairs in the film, but still - pretty cool, no?)

Etheline is a hard-working, incredibly smart woman, and she likes her suits.

Henry Sherman's style, meanwhile, is based on the outfits worn by UN secretary Kofi Annan, a pal of Danny Glover's who he introduced to Anderson at an event.  I'm ignorant and don't know much about Kofi Annan but I like his clothes - bow ties, checked shirts and double breasted suits in bold colours are ALWAYS a good idea.

Speaking of bold suits...

Maybe Chas is one of those people who thinks that wearing sports gear all the time will make him more likely to work out.  Maybe he just loves Adidas Originals.  We may never know.  But he and his sons look fantastic in their matching tracksuits (I have three nephews who also wear matching Adidas and it is even more adorable in real life, let me tell you), and highly-strung Chas and his brood are even cuter when their standing with their uncle and grandad.

Ahh yes.  Royal Tenenbaum, played by the inimitable and intimidating Gene Hackman.  There's a good piece on The Playlist about what it was like to work with Hackman on the film.  Here's a chunk of it:

'It turns out the task of protecting Wes Anderson from Gene fell to Bill Murray.  Anderson had tried to stay positive but recalled that Murray had actually come to set, even when the actor was not involved in filming, just to protect the director. “You were not scared of Gene,” Anderson said to Murray. “I noticed early on so I started asking you to come be there. I remember, there was a scene where Gene goes for a walk in the park and I looked up on the top of this rock and you were standing with a cowboy hat watching the set. And you were just there to show solidarity and I was very touched by that.”'

Another reason why Bill Murray is awesome (as if we needed one).

Anyway, Royal Tenenbaum was a sharp dresser.  He sort of incorporated the style of all three of his kids, which is lovely.  There's the sunglasses and camel-hued coat for Richie, the touches of pink for Margot and the suits and stripes for Chas.

(Ooh, hello - Henry Sherman looking dashing, again).

There's a great mix of colours in Tenenbaum's outfits, purples and yellow/green, pink and orange, and then a muted grey suit.  Which seems like a great style rule to live by.

And finally...

There is not much to say about this hero and his protege, except that they're wonderful and any man in a mustard suit and purple polo neck is a dreamboat to me.  Also love the glasses.  Both of theirs.

Well, that's the whole gang, I love them all but my favourites will always be Margot and Richie.

By the way you can visit the Tenebaum's house in Harlem, NY - so tempted to drag Jeremy there when we visit New York next month...

After being completely absorbed in Wes Anderson's best film yet last week (when the credits rolled the packed audience stayed silent in their seats for a couple of minutes, it was like we were all decompressing after the journey.  It was that good), I'm looking forward to what March (and I guess the beginning of April) has to offer.  Well, we have Scarlett Johansson as an extremely dangerous alien prowling the streets of Glasgow, Scarlett Johansson as an ass-kicking expert Russian spy, and THE VERONICA MARS MOVIE.  It's gonna be a great four weeks, guys.

This must be one of the only films in the past few years to have a trailer that makes me feel like I know less about the movie than I thought I did after watching it.  And that's a good thing.  When the film premiered at the Telluride festival the twitter feeds of film critics were ablaze with superlatives.  It seems to be a film you experience rather than watch, with several people describing wobbly legs and dry mouths after screenings.  So, take water and a friend to lean on?  I'm a big fan of Johansson, can't wait to see her get all strange and ethereal.

THE ZERO THEOREM
Speaking of films you experience, I really like the work of Terry Gilliam.  I love it when people create worlds for their audiences to disappear into, which is what Gilliam has done with Brazil, 12 Monkeys and now  TZT.  The conclusion of his dystopian trilogy.  For me cinema is all about being able to escape into another life, and I'm always impressed when I'm confronted by a world that is very far from the one we live in.  Gilliam is a master of escape.  And what's more, this time he's working with the eternally excellent Christoph Waltz, and I order you to Google pictures of Matt Damon in this film immediately.

In other news - I find it hard to spell "theorem" correctly.

CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER
OK, first off, I really want Black Widow to have her own origin film.  Why hasn't that happened yet?  If anyone reads this who knows Marvel Studios/Disney, please can you tell them I think it's a good idea.  Thanks.  Secondly, I love a big fat blockbuster, it's just another glorious form of escape (I feel like there's a theme emerging here), and Chris Evans did a great job in his previous two appearances as Captain America. For those of you who haven't seen the first film, or The Avengers, Evans plays Steve "Normcore" Rogers, a man who used to be slight and not fit to fight, who then became (won't say how as I don't want to spoil it) an American faux-hero (as in he was a symbol of strength but didn't actually do any fighting), until he finally got the chance to prove himself as a badass and legend.  He's a character that has existed in American pop culture since 1941 and I like that the writers didn't shy away from that - there's a great moment in The Avengers when Phil Coulson approaches Captain America with some vintage trading cards asking for them to be signed.  It's directed by the Russo brothers who have won an Emmy for their work on Arrested Development so maybe there will be some *gestures to Black Widow* "Her?!" moments.

THE VERONICA MARS MOVIE
Hold my hands up, I'm not a big Veronica Mars fan, which isn't to say I don't like it, more that I've not had the chance to watch enough of it.  When it came out in the UK I was at Uni and my TV didn't really work, and most weekends I was probably, like, asleep and being a student and eating pot noodles and stuff.  'Cos that's what students do, right?  God I didn't even have access to the internet anywhere other than the library HOW DID I COPE?  Oh, speaking of the internet, this movie was funded by the people who live there (that, my friends, is what we call a segue).  I'm a bit biased when it comes to Kickstarter as it's how the documentary Beyond Clueless we've soundtracked was funded, but I know some people have doubts when it comes to crowd sourcing.  I'm just going to leave this piece about Zach Braff's Kickstarter film by Charlie Lyne here and move on...But yeah, the funding of the Veronica Mars movie seems to have been Kickstarter at it's best, fans having direct contact with the makers and stars of a show they loved, a mutual affection culimating in a glorious creative project.  They needed 2 million and they got 5, and that's just awesome (they're even refunding the people who couldn't watch the film on the download format, technology eh?).  ANYWAY, the reviews look good for this, and I'm hoping it will inspire my next boxset binge.

INSPIRED BY: HEATHERS

OK, so I really should have a croquet set.  And two female friends called Heather.  And a burning desire to rule my High School, even if it involves ruining the lives of people I was pals with before puberty.  And the ability to look past my friends "suicide" to the opportunities it presents in terms of upping my profile and appearing on local news outlets.

What a shame, I don't have any of those things.  Instead I'm going to have to make do with wearing as much of the power colour as possible - and as I now know from my style dissection of the classic 80's film - that's red.  Yes, all you need to turn from a bookish, jaded Heather who wears green and has low self-esteem (that rhymes!), to a full on Queen Bee Heather who struts down the hallways, forcing people to sign petitions and ridiculing her best friend on the chalkboard is some clothing in a scarlet hue.

You can get your own Power Heather Kit - the jacquard jacket and black loafers are from Topshop, the floral skirt from Motel, and the watch is from Limit Ladies.  The essential crimson scrunchie is one I've picked up somewhere on my travels (possibly the Co-Op pharmacy.)

So why not join me?  It's fun over here on the red side...

RECIPE: SAUSAGE AND FENNEL LENTIL STEW

$

This is my first savoury recipe for the blog because - apparently - you cannot live on cake and crumble alone.  I only started cooking with fennel recently, and I feel like my life up to this point has been wasted - it's so peppery and fresh.  Somehow the fennel, along with the the stock, carrots and garlic, turn the lentils into a creamy salty-sweet stew which I can't get enough of.  While this isn't the most beautiful of meals, it's delicious and feels really wholesome and...kind of 70's.  It's also a great recipe for just bunging in any vegetables that you need to use up - in my case a couple of cherry tomatoes. Also, turning sausages into meatballs is something of a revelation for me. I'm surprised it isn't on the news more.

Here's the recipe. It serves 4:

INGREDIENTS
Pack of sausages (any kind you like, although I tend to go with the more plain ones so they absorb more fennel flavour)
Teaspoon of fennel seeds, crushed
2 teaspoons of dried parsley
Fennel bulb, trimmed and sliced
3 carrots, chopped
1 onion, chopped
2 cloves of garlic, chopped (I love garlic so if you're not as keen you might want to use less)
200g puy lentils
1 tablespoon tomato puree
2 tablespoons sultanas (optional)
850ml of chicken or vegetable stock

To serve:
2 lemons cut into quarters
Handful of chopped fresh parsley

METHOD
When you've prepared all your vegetables put them in a pan with the stock and the lentils and simmer.  This stew will take about 40mins in total to cook, but keep checking (when they're ready the lentils and carrots will be soft, but not mushy).

While that's on the hob get the sausages and squeeze all the meat out into a large bowl.  Add the dried parsley and fennel seeds and season with salt and pepper.  (This recipe would work well with veggie sausages, just cook them as normal and cut them into chunks.  Then add the fennel seeds to the stew rather than the meat).

Roll the sausage meat into little balls. You should get about 40 of them out of a 450g pack of sausages. Lightly oil a griddle or frying pan and cook the meatballs until they're browned but not fully cooked. Here are mine before browning.

After about 25 minutes of simmering the stew, you should still have a little bit of stock left in the pan (if you don't, then top it up with some water), and the carrots and lentils should taste almost ready.  Add the sultanas, if you're using them, and stir in the tomato puree.  Carefully pour in the meatballs and let them sit on top of the stew.  Cover the pan and let it cook for another 10-15 minutes.

After that the water should have all been absorbed into the lentils and the meat should be cooked.  Serve with a wedge of lemon and some fresh parsley on top.

STYLE DISSECTION: PRETTY IN PINK

I've always been pretty open about my love of John Hughes - we were inspired to set our first album in a fictional town we called Condale by the fact Hughes based all his films in the fictional town of Shermer Illinois - and there are references to his movies in a lot of our songs.  He was an awesome man.  HOWEVER, as much as I love Pretty In Pink, I have a few issues with it.  Well, actually, one major issue.  Blaine.

If you haven't seen Pretty In Pink and are planning to then please don't read the rest of this blog.  Everyone else, hi, nice to have you here.

OK so Pretty In Pink is the Cinderella story of Andie Walsh, a poor girl from the wrong side of the tracks (literally, there are train tracks at the opening of the film and Andie's house is right next to them).  This wonderful girl who only wears pink SEE WHAT THEY DID THERE over the course of the film inexplicably - in my opinion - falls for Blaine McDonough, a spineless beige normcore yuppie.

In case you're not getting it yet, I really don't like Blaine.

I would much rather Andie ended up with either Duckie - her hilarious if slightly needy best friend, played by Jon Cryer, or Steff, Blaine's best friend who has secretly been trying to get with Andie for years without Blaine's knowledge.  Steff is played brilliantly by James Spader, one of my favourite actors.  In the film he manages to play a horrible bigoted creep that I still sort of want to get the girl.

Anyway, I'm now going to argue these points further using the wardrobe of the characters.

This is Andie.

She buys most of her clothes secondhand and alters them to make amazing new outfits, which always feature something pink.  She's fond of lace collars, hats, hoop earrings, maxi skirts and florals.  She's sassy and smart and doesn't seem to care what anyone else thinks of her.  Although her feelings are still hurt by these two uber-popular uber-rich girls in her class who insist on uber-bullying her.

I love that green hawaiian shirt though.

Andie lives with her dad in her perfect pink bedroom...

...And spends most of her days with her best buddy Duckie, who is also from the wrong side of the tracks.  I'm as envious of Duckie's wardrobe as I am of Andie's.  Look at this guy.

He wears blazers with the sleeves rolled up, a hat perched precariously behind his quiff, waistcoats/vests, round sunglasses and of course his dirty white duck shoes worn with big thick socks.

Duckie is a great guy, he's the kind of amazing person that will lipsync to Otis Redding in the record shop where his best friend/one true love works, just to entertain her.

I LOVE HIM SO MUCH.

Weirdly though, Andie is pretty unaffected by this performance, in fact she actually seems to find it sort of exacerbating and makes this face:

That very same night she goes on her first date with Blaine, a man so uninspired he dresses only in shades of blue and beige.  He's like the 80's version of Season-One-Dawson-Leery.  Look:

BEIGE AND GREY

BEIGE AND BLUE

BEIGE AND PURPLE

BEIGE AND BLUE (AGAIN)

I mean, seriously guys, I know it's part of his 80's casual rich boy/preppy look, and sometimes it works, but I have a theory that it was the costume department's way of saying, "This guy is not good enough for Andie".  And when Andie is with him, she's beige.  The only time in the entire film when she's not wearing pink is on their first date when he takes her to Steff's awful (but amazing) house party.  She wears a grey matching skirt and jacket with pearls.

Whereas when she's with Duckie it's like their outfits are riffing off each other in a wonderful expression of their characters.

Yes, those are little silver pigs hanging off her top.  She found those pigs somewhere, liked them, thought, "these would look good on my pink cardigan", then actually sewed them on there. Or should I say, sowed.

(This is my favourite of Andie's outfits in the film.  Look at those trousers, and I love this lace top she puts over everything and then tops off with an embellished cardigan).

Apparently John Hughes initially planned to have Duckie and Andie end up together and somewhere in Hollywood there exists a cut of the film where that happens.  But test audiences wanted her to end up with Blaine instead (*shakes fist at Test Audiences*) so they re-shot the film and no one ever saw the Duckie ending.  Which is a massive shame, not only because Duckie looks totally babe-ing in the final prom scene.

They're meant to be together.

(Andie made her prom dress herself, of course).  Here is a screen-grab gif montage of her getting ready for Prom:

And she wears these shoes and tights with the dress.  PINK EXPLOSION.

Oh, and speaking of Gifs, this is how Blaine introduces himself to Andie in the library.

OK, I guess that's kind of cool, but it's also a bit OTT/creepy, isn't it?

And after this Amstrad exchange Blaine stands up and looks so insanely pleased with himself, "Oh hi, I'm a beige superhero".

Now.  Steff.  I need to say this first, he's awful.  But damn, he can wear a linen suit.

Andie's bag <3.

Also the other thing you need to know about Steff is that the more evil he's being, the less buttons he has done up on his shirt.

A bit evil:

Slightly more evil:

Seriously serious about being evil:

So evil he's not even wearing a shirt, he's just wearing a robe, boxer shorts, and is drinking whisky and watching cartoons at his own house party.

One of my favourite moments in the film is when Steff and Duckie brawl in the hallway.  The reason they're fighting is because Duckie has overheard Steff telling Blaine that he should forget about Andie and not bring her to house parties anymore.  But we know the real reason Steff is saying this is because he's jealous and secretly loves Andie.  And of course Duckie openly loves Andie, so it's rejected love fighting more rejected love, and Steff isn't wearing any socks.

Blaine never fights for Andie.  That's all I'm saying.  Instead he just lies in his beige room on his beige bed drinking out of a beige mug, not calling her on his beige phone.

Oh, I've just changed my mind THIS is my favourite of Andie's outfits in the film.

That Korea silk bomber and those shorts are incredibaaaall.

Oh, who's that lady she's dancing with you ask?  It's only her best friend and boss/mentor/mother figure Iona (played by Annie Potts).  Iona has a different style inspiration every day, she's the frickin' coolest.

I also love her apartment.

Anyway look, I know I can't change the past, and I'm sure Andie and Blaine are really happy with each other.  I also accept that Steff was never going to get over his own prejudices to be with her, so he was never really an option...but a girl can dream right?  I mean, look at that body languge - these guys do not look like they'll be together forever:

So let's leave it on some screengrabs of Duckie singing to himself in Andie's bedroom:

And a cute dog.

MAPPING THE MUSIC AND STYLE IN 'EMPIRE RECORDS'

$

I originally wrote this for Noisey, but am posting here as I like the feeling of having everything in it's right place.  I'm a control freak and I'm proud of it.
In the days before the internet, before streaming and Spotify and Soundcloud, the coolest place in the world was the independent record shop. Rows and rows of shiny LPs, sparkling crystal CD cases, plus members of staff to big style crush on. Saturdays were spent shuffling slowly around the linoleum, thumbing through album after album, the slender wad of bills growing increasingly damp in your sweaty hand. If you were in a band you would go to the record shop to listen to other bands for free, sharing headphones with the rest of the teenagers in your area. If you weren't in a band you'd go there to dream about what it would be like to be in a band, or just peacock your carefully put together outfit which indicated whatever musical tribe you belonged to.
But back to the staff. You had to be a very special kind of person to work in a record store. Maybe you were the guy who knew everything about every band ever, key example—Jack Black in High Fidelity. You would find it a personal insult if someone didn't own Blonde On Blonde, you relished the opportunity to correct someone when they quoted a lyric wrong or messed up release dates for the third EP by Your Favorite Band. Possibly you were just someone who loved music. You couldn't get enough, your enthusiasm knew no bounds. Everything about it excited you, you wanted to be a part of it in any way—even just standing next to a Gin Blossoms vinyl made you feel alive and purposeful. Or perhaps you were like Gina and Corey in Empire Records. Yes, you're really into bands, yeah you like being in that world, but mostly you're just there because you know it's seriously fun to work in a place where you can listen to music all day and there are loads of angsty babes strolling around.
When Empire Records was released in 1995 it gave suburban lame-os like me the chance to see what it would actually be like to work in a record shop (I gave my resumé to loads of places when I was a teen but they never gave me a job. Boohoo). It was pure grunge glamor, there was misunderstandings and miscommunications, but also kilts and hash brownies. And the soundtrack—woah boy—the soundtrack. I was introduced to so many bands thanks to Empire Records. Bands whose albums I bought, but then probably only listened to the one song I knew from movie. I'm happy to say it's a film that stands up to repeat viewing almost twenty years later, especially since—did you get the memo?—90s style in music and fashion is back. Still. Majorly. Anyway, let's jump in. Mandatory listening while reading below.
While Cher and Dionne were making over a clueless New Yorker with Botticelli curls, Corey (that's the babelicious Liv Tyler) and her best friend Gina (Renée Zellweger) were driving to their day job at a downtown record shop.
Dionne ran from her pristine fairytale mansion in a kilt and PVC hat… while Corey ran from her white mini-mansion in a kilt and bare feet.

Clueless vs Empire Records.
Empire records

Only to be picked up by her blonde best friend in her wagon/jeep type car. But that's where the similarities end. For where Dionne was a confident, self-assured teenage girl drowning in affluence, Corey is a sweet, but highly-strung genius. She is also tragically obsessed with the Worst Pop Star Of All Time, Rex Manning.
empire records
Luckily she has her best friend Gina to bring her crashing down to the sidewalk, which she does by licking Corey's Rex Manning vinyl.  #Realfriendship
empire records
Both Corey and Gina have wells of darkness deep within their souls. Corey is a pill-popping speed freak—her trembling ingestion scored perfectly by Edwyn Collins'"A Girl Like You"—who desperately wants to control everything. Meanwhile Gina is terrified of turning into her mother, an aging, miserable beauty who never did anything with her life.
So Gina acts out by dancing in nothing but an apron as "Thorn In My Side" by Quicksand reverberates through the work speakers.
empire records

Style-wise, though (other than the apron), both these girls have it sorted. Their fashion rules are:
1.     Kilts and/or A-Line skirts.
2.     A cropped knit on top. Fluffy jumper for Corey, cardigan for Gina.
3.     A simple necklace.
4.     Matte lipstick.
5.     Black loosely laced DM boots or clogs.

Sadly, over the course of this incredibly eventful day, things go slightly awry for this best-friends-forever pair. The first terrible thing to happen is when Corey announces this to Rex:
Groan. NO COREY. And then, after making sure she's the one who gets to prepare the office for his arrival, she throws herself at the awful purple crooner. By the way, Corey's “I'm finally going to get to seduce that smarmy bouffant-ed creep I've been in love with since a kid” song of choice is "Snakeface" by Throwing Muses. A big fat recommended read is Kristin Hersh's autobiography Rat Girl. It's tremendous.
Anyway, finally, the moment Corey has been waiting for arrives .(I remember being outraged by these panties when I was a kid watching this for the first time, but now I think they're pretty cool).
Of course Rex proves himself to be the awful human being we all knew he was, unzipping his fly and quipping, “Rock and roll.” Which, thankfully breaks the spell he holds on Corey, and she is free to run away from him and fall in love with someone far more worthy. Although, not for a while. Before she does that she has to insult her best friend.

BURN! Gina retaliates by doing the one thing she knows she can do, but Corey can't.
Rex Manning. They have sex while perched on a photocopier. And post-coitus, when all the staff have realized what's going on and are waiting outside the door, Rex emerges and nails his coffin of douchebaggery firmly shut:
empire records
Corey completely freaks out, screaming and kicking wildly, tipped over the edge when Gina starts throwing her speed on the floor. Her outrage is soundtracked perfectly by "Powershack" by Fitz Of Depression. What's that? You want to know a bit more about Fitz Of Depression? Well, let me oblige. Fitz Of Depression were one of those awesome 90s hardcore/punk bands who mixed in the same circles as Nirvana and Bikini Kill. In fact all three bands played together in 1991 for a benefit to help their lead singer and guitarist Mikey Dees pay off fines for traffic violations. There's a documentary about it called Hype! somewhere in the ether if you're interested.
Anyway, Corey and Gina. Don't worry friends, the ladies find their way back into each other's love. Helped, no doubt, by music (maybe).

LUCAS

Lucas is, like, so deep. He's the lost boy of Empire Records. He tries to help out his boss, mentor and replacement daddy Joe by taking the shop's earnings to Vegas so he can win enough cash to save it from being bought by corporate swine Music Town. He's so full of good feelings as he rides his motorbike to Sin City (of course he has a motorbike) with The Ape Hangers “I Don't Want To Live Today” thundering in his ears. Can you dig?
But of course he loses everything and hence the film is given its main narrative trajectory which all the characters have to work together to fix. Lucas loves his philosophical quotes and is always chatting intense stuff about living without regrets and shit. Please put on “The Honeymoon Is Over” by Cruel Sea and stare intently at the screengrab below for at least three minutes.
empire records
Thanks. Hey, remember those yellow-hued sunglasses everyone wore in the 90s? I wish I didn't.
empire records
Ugh Lucas that's sooooooo Hackers.
Lucas seems to have based his look on Lou Reed, but also with a twist of French poet—hence the black turtleneck—and he loves his sunglasses so much he wears them in badly-lit rooms at night. Be careful when you stand up, buddy, you might bash your knee on the table.
empire records
This look was also appropriated by the Jonathan Fire*Eater's singer Stewart Lupton. Ahh, those guys. They were signed to David Geffen’s DreamWorks label, modeled for Calvin Klein, then completely self-destructed three years later amid whispers of Stew's heroin addiction (three JF*Es went on to form The Walkmen, of course). Big shame, they were great. Still, his look (and Lou's) lived on in many of the bands kicking around NYC in the early 2000s (hello The Strokes, The Realistics, The Mooney Suzuki).
When Joe realizes Lucas's grave gambling gaffe he demands that he stay on the sofa for the rest of the day so he can't get into any more trouble. So Lucas sits there, sunglasses off, like a petulant child who ate too much cake and vomited all over their grandma.
empire records
“I WAS ONLY TRYING TO HELP.”
Although he can't resist jumping off the sofa to mime the lyrics to AC/DC's “If You Want Blood,” which Joe likes to drum along to in order to release tension. It's like yoga for hard-bitten, worn-down record store owners.
empire records

Joe of course gets seriously pissed when he catches his wayward employee rockin' out to his therapy, but it's okay, they kiss and make up. Or rather weirdly mirror each other's movements as film shorthand to show how close the characters are.
empire records

Please put on the “Hey Joe” cover by the Dirt Clods —GREAT NAME GUYS—and let your emotions rise to the surface.
MARK
Ah, Mark, he was always my favorite. A sweetheart who's prone to starting moshpits to Suicidal Tendencies when it's far too early, and eating hash brownies while thinking he's being devoured by a giant monster. All as Daniel Johnston warbles beautifully in the background. He's also really good at screaming. If Mark were to make you a mixtape, and he probably would, since his best friend Eddie is always telling him:
It would almost definitely include something from Dark Side Of The Moon.
However the soundtrack would probably also include some of the bands he and Eddie discuss intensely over the end credits of the film, including...
Mark: That guy, whatever his name is. What’s his name? That dude with the shaved head? The liar guy?
Eddie: Henry Rollins?
Mark: Yes, the guy with tattoos all over.
Eddie: I admit, Henry Rollins is sort of a puss.
Mark: Yeah, he’s a total puss. His lyrics suck.
Eddie: But you can’t go and put down the Misfits. They had everything it took to be a great punk band. They had good bass lines and strong guitar chords… even though they were only three.
Mark: They didn’t even compare to Primus. They were that old school stuff.
Eddie: Why get into Primus? Primus sucks.
Mark: Primus is the new stuff. Out with the old, in with the new.
So weird to think of Primus being “the new stuff.”
Mark's style tips seem to be:
1.     Dyed orange hair with a short fringe.
2.     Worn out band t-shirt.
3.     Silver skater chain.
4.     Baggy grey cord trousers.
5.     Topped off with an expression that says I'm stoned and/or completely clueless.
6.     And a love of dancing to "Money" by Flying Lizards with your best friend.
empire records

When I was younger this was my favorite scene in the movie, I had a huge crush on Ethan Embry, and thought he was the sweetest thing ever. I listened to this song over and over again, dreaming of him. Sigh. He's very funny on Twitter by the way.

DEBRA

On the day the spotlight is thrown onto Empire Records, Debra isn't very happy. In fact the first thing Debra does when she arrives at work is shave her head, which is a brave move by anyone's standards.
This is obviously a huge cry for help, but sadly not everyone at the shop is understanding of Deb's new look. Gina especially is confused by this follicle re-think.
empire records
Don't worry, Deb has the perfect retort, “Well you get smarter the shorter your skirts get.” ZING.
Then Deb pulls back her sleeves to show this:
empire records
Oh crap, now you guys feel really bad. The poster girl for inner turmoil and non-conformity, Debra is a live action Daria. Her style is pretty functional. She shrugs on a hoodie, cropped grey vest, big flares. But it's all pulled together with her sassy flair and love of outrageous statements delivered in a flat monotone.
empire records
(This is when the gang give Debra a funeral to show her they would miss her if she died. It's a long story).
Musically Debra is everything that was awesome about American 90s alt rock. When she shaves her head "Free" by The Matinis is on the stereo. It suits her perfectly with its sweet female vocals, gutsy roughed-up guitars, and the overwhelming feeling of melancholy  Oh, and mystical elements in the lyrics. BTW, The Matinis comprises Joey "Pixies" Santiago and his wife Linda Mallari, and they're still going.
She's also totally in tune (sorry) with "Sorry" by Sybil Vane, one of those Liz Fraser-esque singers who's happy to really mine those emotional depths. The chorus of “I'm sorry” repeated over and over again in a progressively strained voice totally matches the angst Debra displays. Also, cool name Sybs *nods smugly atThe Picture of Dorian Grey'reference.*  Don't worry though, Debs is going to be fine. She finds a new friend in Corey, the pair bonding over their mutual cries for help.
empire records
Then Debra pees in front of her.
A.J.
Ah, A.J.: the epitome of the 90s grunge heartthrob. He has floppy hair, the huge brown eyes, unrequited desire, and the love of art. Yep, A.J. has it all. Stylistically he goes for a white vest, dog-eared flannel (or is that burlap?), old cardigan combo. An all-time classic look. Ooh, nice pinky ring friend. You steal that from your Mom?
empire records
He also uses this rather lovely pocket watch to keep track of the time, which is very important as he's planning on telling Corey he loves her at a very specific time. He's so quirky!
Then he draws a picture of Corey and glues some dimes to the floor.  I told you he was arty!

A.J.'s soundtrack would HAVE to be "Romeo and Juliet" by Dire Straits. He IS a love struck Romeo and, man, he's about to crap it up by making a huge romantic declaration to a girl who has no idea how he feels. And he almost does it by saying she makes him feel like when he has a really hot bath. Face, meet my palm, you two live together now. Understandably, his love confession is not well received, especially since Corey has her own things to admit.
Oh goodness, that grimace says it all. But no worries, it all works out in the end. The most aesthetically perfect couple of 90s grunge are finally together. Well, after Corey pushes A.J. over, of course.
They kiss in the moonlight as Gin Blossoms' Robin Wilson croons in the background.
Then all the beautiful people at Empire Records dance on the roof to "This Is The Day" by The The. Represent for London!  (The lead singer of The The, Matt Johnson is very active in trying to keep Shoreditch, east London, protected from the sprawl of the banking area close by). The The have had 18 members in 34 years, with Matt being the only constant. He's worked with members of Wire, is signed to 4AD, owns a book publishing company and seems like a pretty awesome human. A superb way to end the film.
Wait, should we talk about Rex Manning's hair and style?
Jesus, let's not.

I like these ones.  They're a bit leopard print, a bit gold.  Hey, there's a lot going on.  I'm not one hundred percent sure about the Scary Spice Stance (TM) I'm doing in the photo, but sometimes life is about taking risks, and what better way to challenge yourself than by putting a weird picture of yourself on the internet?  I've finally worked out how to keep nail wraps on for about ten days without them killing my nails - moisturise.  And wipe away the glue properly with nail varnish remover after the uber-satisifying act of peeling off the foil.  It reminds me of covering my hands with glue in art class as a kid just so I could peel it off in one big glossy piece, such good times.

15 leopard print thumbs up.

We've been in Callifornia the last couple of weeks having amazing family times and soaking up the sunshine. Although I got heat rash because apparently I'm so pale I'm actually allergic to that yellow ball of fire in the sky.  One day last week we spent some time in Venice Beach, LA, a mixture of beautiful and unusual houses on the canals (see below) and medicinal marijuana shops and dreadlocks on the boardwalk.  There are also a lot of murals.  I like murals.

I was pretty chuffed when Jeremy spotted a The Craft-esque shop on Abbot Kinney - a beautiful street packed with lots of shops selling gorgeous furniture and clothes.  The sign outside offered the chance to build a celebrity brand FOR FREE!  And inside there were loads of helpful books with information about local ghosts, and how to harness the spiritual power contained within your child.

For lunch I went to Poke-Poke a little hole in the wall near the boardwalk.  They sell big chunks of raw tuna marinated in sesame oil and shoyu, and laid on brown rice.  It was amazing.  Jeremy got a sandwich from GTA, the takeaway bit of Gjelina.  This place was so good.  Look at those brownies and cookies, and what is a Berry Buckle?!  It looks wonderful.

I was wearing my checked trousers from Missguided, which are my current favourites, and a crop from Mango, and I love this ASOS white book bag.  Oh and I was covered with factor 50 suncream.  #AlwaysPale.  We're playing in Brooklyn tonight, come on down!

Very happy to announce that we will be doing our live score for 'Beyond Clueless' in Sheffield on the 10th of June at 6pm in the Crucible Theatre.  It will be part of Doc/Fest, which is Britain's biggest documentary festival, and we're all extremely excited.

If you want to come and watch there are tickets for sale on the film's website.  Charlie, the film's director, did a great interview with The Cut, which also happens to be one of my favourite magazines.

And finally here is a picture of the film's narrator, Fairuza Balk, posing with a poster from the film designed by the dreamy Hattie Stewart.  I made the image as big as possible as you can never get enough Nancy.

BROOKLYN: THRIFT SHOPPING AND TACO TRUCKS

We got back from our US mini tour last night, so I'm writing this in a grog-tastic jetlagged state.  Please forgive any spelling mistakes, I'm sure I will make laods.

Over the past two weeks we have played shows in LA, Washington DC, Brooklyn and Manhattan, and they were all great - thank you so much if you came to see us, we love the US and are already looking forward to our next trip.  (How's next week for you guys? )

Around the shows we spent a lot of time checking out the areas where we were staying, and when it comes to Brooklyn that means getting to go thrift shopping.  There are so many amazing vintage and charity shops in Williamsburg and the surrounding areas but I will always have a soft spot for Beacon's Closet.  I first went there almost ten years ago when there wasn't much in Williamsburg other than a few coffee shops, a great Thai restaurant, and this bad-ass haven of second hand clothes.  Nowadays Beacon's Closet has a lot of competition and I'm sure there are far better vintage emporiums to be found, but to me it's Old Faithful.  I never fail to find a drool-worthy bargain amongst the rails of clothes, and this trip was no exception - check out the Anna Sui and Michael Kors shoes just hanging out on the shelves, gathering dust.  This time I couldn't buy much as our suitcases were already bursting with M&M's and root beer, but that didn't stop me bringing my huge Made In Hell-A bag just in case I needed to fill it up.

Made in Hell-A are an awesome little label from LA who make T-shirts, jumpers, caps and bags that poke fun at designers with supremely punny slogans, like 'Praduh' and 'Donezo'.  I'm going to do a proper piece on them soon, I'm a big fan.

Other stuff Brooklyn does really well are murals and tacos.  To be fair, LA is also chock-full of wall paintings, and they're not too shabby when it comes to Mexican trucks either, but Jeremy insisted his lunch from Tacos Morelos on North 7th and Bedford was one of the best ever, and I refuse to argue with that man (apart from over who gets to eat the last peanut butter M&M).

THE WHITE OUTFIT // ROCK CAKES PUMPKIN RING

I've wanted to do an all white outfit for a while, I've always liked the idea of wearing one colour exclusively, ever since I was a teenager and accidentally/on purpose wore a completely blue outfit to school.  Blue jeans, blue trainers (ugh), turquoise T-shirt which I had altered myself (ugh squared), the sleeves of said T-shirt used as a turquoise headband (ugh-tastic), turquoise jewellery and a blue rucksack.  In fact for most of my last year at school, I only wore turquoise.  And tops I'd made myself out of pillow cases, which my friends will NEVER LET ME FORGET.

I digress.  Last summer we wore a lot of white on stage, and it felt great.  It makes you feel special and a bit tanned and, well, clean.  (Until you have to trek through mud and get it splattered all up the legs of your white suit of course.)  We're playing festivals again this season so I'm starting to think about what to wear on stage (it's really important you guys!!) and I think once again white might be all right.

So, the trousers are from Missguided.  I have written that sentence a lot on this blog.  I find buying trousers a bit of a nightmare, so when I find a style I like I tend to go mad and buy them in every colour possible.  Which is  exactly what I've done with these Marilyn cigarette cut trousers.  (They call the shade I'm wearing here cream but I think they're super dooper white, see-through-to-your-pants white in fact).  The shirt is from Boohoo, I love the daisy lace effect, and the boots and clutch bag (which I got a while ago and now can't find on the site) are both from the ever-glorious ASOS.

The pumpkin ring is from Rock Cakes, AKA Sarah Meredith, who makes beautiful jewellery in Brighton.  She works in silver, gold and precious gems, but is as equally at home with acrylics and wood.  Everything she sells is handmade, from personalised wedding rings, gold bicycle necklaces, ice cream pendants, and skull and bone brooches.  Can you tell I'm a big fan? You can see her Etsy shop here.

Now I just need to invest in some extra-strength stain remover, and I'll be all set for summer.

STYLE DISSECTION: ROMEO AND JULIET

If I was really honest with myself, I would have to say that my heart has only really been broken once. And it was by this film.  I remember watching it in the cinema as a young teenager, who had never spoken to a boy, and had one broken arm wrapped up in a cast (irrelevant).  I knew what was coming at the end of the film, but still, for days afterward I moped around the house.  I looked wistfully out of the window.  I sighed a lot.  It all seemed incredibly painful - no one had ever loved me the way Romeo and Juliet loved each other.  And how tragic that their love, so pure and innocent, was thwarted because of that one true enemy of all teenagers everywhere: parents.

Of course now I rewatch the film and realise that R+J were kind of dumb.  They got married after two conversations with each other.  They (spoiler alert) were messing around with deadly drugs and guns. They decided to put relative strangers before their friends and families.  But then isn't that what being a teenager is all about?  Allowing emotions to completely dictate your decisions?  Rebelling even when you know it's almost definitely not going to end well?

So in some ways it's cathartic to look back on this film and scoff. It's like looking at an ex who broke your heart on Facebook and feeling smug that you're over them now.  Oh, but then you stumble across a photo that catapults you straight back to 1996 and the way you felt once, and it's suddenly all so real, and just...there.

Sorry, I need to take a moment.

Anyway, which family would you like to be from?  Capulet?

These guys have perfectly styled hair (in fact all the male looks in this film are perfect).  They wear a lot of suits and vests, they favour black and blood red, they drive a blue car, they adorn themselves with religious iconography and steel-capped boots.  They're crisp and slick.  And this is how they dress at a costume party.

"No way guys, it's MY turn to wear the sequin devil horns, Nigel had them last time".

Juliet is of course a Capulet.  But unlike her cousins she's soft and angelic.  She mainly wears white, and uses little makeup.

I love the buttons and sleeves on this funeral dress above.  Very The Craft/Stevie Nicks

Look how beautiful she is at her wedding, below to Romeo (a man with whom she's had no more than  two very short chats - sorry, just had to repeat that).  So simple and elegant, so nervous and young.

Also I can't ever remove Angela Chase from my thoughts when I'm watching young Claire Danes.  I also feel like getting married to someone she has just met is totally what Angela Chase would dream of doing, only she would have worn plaid for the Big Day.  Oh and the other difference is we know that unlike Jordan Catalano, Romeo can read, or at least write.

However one of my favourite Juliet outfits is the one she wears when she's SERIOUSLY EMOTIONAL. It's so cute, with the beret and big white collar, and those gloves are perfect for holding that gun.

Look at Paul Rudd!  Another reason this film hasn't stood the test of time for me is that over the years Rudd has proven himself time and time again to be an exceptional human, and the idea that marrying him would be so awful you'd hold a gun to your head seems very unbelievable in 2014.

He's also hilarious in this film, and his hair is gorgeous and full of body and shine.

I laughed so hard when he did his ridiculous "I take myself very seriously" dance, and even harder when he was genuinely thrilled by the glitter falling from the ceiling. What a dreamboat. Delightful!

By the way guys, Juliet also has some very beautiful pink jacquard pyjamas which she wears when she's pretending to be dead.

Another Capulet with amazing style is Juliet's mother.  Particularly when she's getting ready to be Cleopatra at the party.  She's so sassy and bold and covered in sequins and marabou feathers.

Personally though, I think I prefer the style of the Montagues more.  They're looser and more fun than the Capulets.  And I love a good Hawaiian shirt, especially when matched with pale pink hair and a black eye.

At the start Romeo doesn't seem that keen on wearing the Tommy Bahama stylings of his crew, in fact he leans slightly more toward the Capulets in his dark suits and large-lapelled shirts.

And I love a man who enjoys dressing up for a costume party.  He's a joiner!

[One minute of silence for the aquarium scene]

...Thank you.

Later though, as his alliances get tested more and more by violence and murder, he shrugs on that patterned short sleeved fabric armour, and wears it proudly with his wounds.  (Also, shout out to Mercutio for his gauzy see-through shirt).

Romeo's hair is exemplary.  Whether it's perfectly combed at his wedding, slicked back by water, or poofy from running around a lot, it's always blonde-highlighted-perfection.

Also, this costume of Mercutio's is totally on point.

I'm going to end the post with two things I spotted that were references to Shakespeare (whose birthday it was today): the reworked Coke logo has a 'wherfore', and the pool hall where Romeo hangs out is called Globe Theatre.

Nice touch Baz!  Now please recut the ending so that R+J live.
