STYLE DISSECTION: JACKIE BURKHART FROM 'THAT 70S SHOW'

Jackie Burkhart, the beautiful, superficial, hilarious cheerleader from That 70s Show was the breakout role for Mila Kunis.  In fact Ukranian born Mila was still struggling with English when she landed the part, and lied about her age in the audition, claiming to be 18 when she was really 14.  Which I love.  Obviously since then she's gone onto be a major Hollywood star, one who is as smart as she is talented - remember when she put down a journalist in Russian?

I didn't really watch That 70s Show when it came out, but it popped up on Netflix the other day, and oh my god it's brilliant.  So funny - hey, why isn't Topher Grace more famous? And it's great to see a young Laura Prepon before her Orange Is The New Black days.  I love lots of the outfits worn by the characters on the show, but Jackie's wardrobe is the one I covet the most.  A lot of paisley, plenty of patterns, mountains of colourful knitwear, and even some glamourous disco looks.  There's a pretty great blog where someone has collated every Jackie outfit, along with Polyvore'd outfits so you can recreate her look - very relevant to my interests.  I've done an edit of my favourites below, and I'm definitely going to be trying to dress like her in the future.  I think the 70s really are back, I just saw the trailer for A Most Violent Year where Jessica Chastain looks immaculate in late 70s/early 80s garms, see also the trailer for Inherent Vice for excellent 70s style inspiration.  It's all happening.

Anyway, take it away Jackie.

MATCHING COLOURS IS KEY

Jackie will often pick a colour and do an entire outfit in different shades of that hue - from the flares, to the waistcoat, to the ribbons, to the bag.  Jackie does not do minimal.  I used to dress like this when I was a teenager, although it was always turquoise, and I looked terrible.  Sometimes Jackie doesn't go for it as intensely as she has done here, instead picking a more subtle colour combination, see below.

I also like it when she does it with colours that don't usually play a starring role in an outfit, such as peach.

COATS AND JACKETS ARE CRUCIAL
It seems to be winter a lot in Point Place Wisconson, so Jackie invests her allowance in a wide array of coats and jackets.  Here are a few of my favourites.

This white and red festive fluffy one with a belt.  Notice as well the co-ordinating bag and rollneck.

This is a very glam American Hustle-esque, wear it over your glittery dress to Studio 54, oversized fur collar coat, which also has a belt, I'm getting that coats and jackets with belts is a very '70s silhouette.  Are you getting that too?  Good.

THE fur bomber, which looks great with high-waisted flares and one of her knitted cropped jumpers.  I love this jacket so much.

Denim blazer with stripy lining anyone?

Her satin jackets - she has one in red and one in white.  This roller disco outfit is pretty spectacular in general, and also she loves a rainbow.

See, told you.

She also loves these shell/puffer jackets and gilets.  This outfit below where she wears one with saddle shoes and her cheerleader outfit is one of my favourite looks of all time worn by anyone ever.  I want some saddle shoes SO BAD WAARGH *breaks a table like The Hulk*

And finally, this tartan long coat that she has bravely paired with a lime green roll neck.  It shouldn't work, but it totally does!  I think it must be her sassiness.

ONLY HOOP EARRINGS
Jackie is always, ALWAYS, in hoop earrings.

BERETS ARE YOUR FRIENDS

Be brave.  Be beret. (I just realised she's not wearing hoops in this photo and now I don't know who I am anymore or why I even bother).

Oh look, a neck scarf!

CO-ORDINATES ARE A LIFESTYLE CHOICE
A lot of us have been playing around with the idea of co-ordinates over the last year, matching our tops to our bottoms exactly and feeling like Cher Horowitz.  Well Jackie takes that urge and indulges it thoroughly.  She's a world champion in co-ordinates, she does it better than anyone.

Got some vintage ladies printed on your flares and your top there?  Cool.

PROM IS WHERE IT GETS SERIOUS
I feel like prom was the chance for suburban Jackie to channel her New York disco goddess self, and strut her way into that gym with a babe on her arm and platform sandals on her feet.  It's also the time for her to explore the challenging world of hair accessories.

I love this dress above, it's both warm and sparkly, ideal combination.  In real life Danny Masterson who played Hyde took Mila to her own prom.  Which is adorable.

WEAR WEDGES WITH YOUR BIKINI
Just good common sense, really.

DRESS FOR THE HOLIDAY
It makes sense that Jackie, the serial monogamist, would be a fan of Valentines day, so much so she has a special outfit for it.

CASUAL JACKIE IS DREAMY JACKIE
I love her look when she's just in a t-shirt or jumper and jeans.  Her makeup and hair are still turned up to 11, so she looks relaxed but gorgeous.

SOMETIMES IT'S OK TO DRESS OLDER THAN YOU ARE
Jackie often wanders into the world of '70s business dressing, and it usually works.  Although it can be a bit intense.

But then she'll pull it back with an extreme crop like this and we'll know where we are again.

ALL DEM ROLL NECKS
So. Many. Roll. Necks.

IF YOU OWN A SHIRT LIKE THIS YOU SHOULD WEAR IT A LOT OK?

Cool.  Thanks Jackie!
